HDPE High Density Polyethylene

HDPE is the acronym for High Density Polyethylene. The plastic recycling code for HDPE is #2. HDPE is produced from petroleum; it is a thermoplastic that melts into a liquid state. This makes it great for recyclable products. Manufacturers are encouraged to use HDPE scraps in order to lessen the impact on the environment. HDPE has properties that make it useful for a wide range of applications. It is non-toxic and non-staining which makes it ideal for use with foodstuffs. HDPE is used in our everyday lives without most of us knowing. It meets the FDA/USDA food handling guidelines (natural color). It is chemical and corrosion resistant and light weight.

 The Science behind HDPE

HDPE is an effective barrier against moisture. With a melting point more than 20 °C (36 °F) higher than LDPE, it can withstand repeated exposure to 120 °C (250 °F) so that it can be sterilized. The lack of branches in its structure allows the polymer chains to pack closely together, resulting in a dense, highly crystalline material of high strength and moderate stiffness.

 Applications for HDPE

HDPE plastic is the plastic that Tupperware ™ is made of. HDPE is also found in other everyday plastics like grocery bags, water pipes, refillable water bottles and milk bottles, and cutting boards in restaurants and butchers.
