PETG Polyethylene Terephthalate
PETG plastic resin is from the polyester family that is used to make beverage, food and other liquid containers, as well as for some other thermoforming applications. PETG is a clear amorphous thermoplastic that can be injection molded or sheet extruded. It can be colored during processing. PETG sheet complies with the FDA requirements for food contact.
The desirable quality of PETG is that it is recyclable. PETG is chemical resistant, has outstanding deep draw thermoforming and is impact resistant at low temperatures. It is easy to fabricate and machine. It is naturally colorless with good clarity and very lightweight. PETG is more impact resistant than acrylic and less expensive than Lexan/polycarbonate.
Applications for PETG
PETG can be easily painted, silk screened, hot stamped, fabricated and formed. PETG is used in Point Of Purchase displays and store fixture industries. PETG is compatible with foodstuffs and is odorless. Thicker gauges of rigid PETG (1/8” and up) offer a broad range of properties which make it an excellent choice for point of purchase displays, store fixtures, furniture, machine shields, viewing ports, cooling counters and prostheses. PETG sheet is also widely used for signage and graphic applications because it has the ability to accept inks, paints and pigments.
The Science behind PETG Sheets
PETG is PET or polyethylene terephthalate with the addition of glycol. By adding glycol to PET it removes the hazing effect during heating and also prevents a crystallization effect that causes standard PET to become brittle. PETG forming temperatures range from 250°F – 320°F. Work temperatures range from -40°F to 150°F. PETG is transparent co-polyester that offers a unique balance of physical properties and ease of fabrication. PETG is the ideal material for applications that require deep draws, complex die cuts and precise molded-in details without sacrificing structural integrity.
